This report is to show the progress achieved within the period between 1 January and 10 February 2003. It complements the ICONS managerial report covering the second ICONS semester (from 1 July till 31 December 2002) [ICONS D30]. As the period of interest is relatively short we decided to concentrate mainly on the achievements and to neglect aspects like resources consumed, dissemination, project management, which are amply treated in [ICONS D30]. Please note also that the results presented here were not produced in the period of interest but rather were completed in this period based on the effort undertaken in the previous periods.
In the period of interest the ICONS project completed work pertaining to the crucial aspects of ICONS architecture: knowledge representation constituting the principal platform for the ICONS prototype. Progress was achieved with respect to distribution constituting means to deal with performance and scalability issues.
Workpackage 2 (Multiparadigm Knowledge Representation) has been completed and the corresponding milestone has been achieved. The principal result of the milestone (M3 - Formal definition of the multi-paradigm ICONS knowledge representation scheme) is a knowledge representation scheme reconciling incompatibilities among different knowledge representation paradigms (structural, procedural and declarative). Selected problems pertaining to particular types of knowledge are amply presented in reports [ICONS D07, ICONS D08, ICONS D09]. The ICONS integrated knowledge schema is presented in [ICONS D10].
Within Workpackage 5 (Distributed Content Repository) task T1 has been completed. This resulted in the corresponding report [ICONS D18]. This first report of task T1 presents SDDS (Scalable Distributed Data Storage) and selected aspects of optimisation of storage and processing loads.
The current consortium stress is on implementation of the ICONS prototype according to what is planned in [ICONS D17] in order to allow the development of the Structural Fund Project Knowledge Portal in the next semester. As was indicated in [ICONS D14], due to the rigid time schedule the assumed development process is rather "agile" in the sense that it depends on experimentation, frequent integration and refactoring. This allows for a sound feedback between detailed design and implementation as well as testing. Therefore, the technical solutions of the detailed design level will be partially elaborated in this cycle and available for the final documentation later than initially planned. Consequently, [ICONS D13] (focusing on user interface relevant aspects), [ICONS D20] (focusing on integration aspects) and [ICONS D21] (focusing on all the remaining aspects) will be available at the end of May 2003.
