Short Description:

This document is to identify a number of research areas and results which are existing in the ICONS partner labs, along with other (external) relevant research. It underpins the ICONS architecture and provides a superset of the full conceptual scope of the architecture and the direction of its development.

The research streams described in this document consists of the four topics of Knowledge Representation, Repository, Collaboration and Information Integration, which cover the principal research streams of the partners - each at the cutting edge of the corresponding specialism, which a selection of the project directions must be made from these based on the Reference Architecture and project objectives.

To illustrate the approach taken in this analysis and in the selection of the project research base upon which harmonized and extended research results will be based within the project's architecture, we look at major aspects of the above topics, and develop these in corresponding sections.
